Strathcona area festival organizers enjoy and welcome sponsorship from companies. Many Strathcona businesses benefit from the profile and community involvement that sponsorship brings. Bike to Work Week in Strathcona
The SBIA is partnering for the first time with the Vancouver Cycling Coalition by
sponsoring two commuter stations for Bike to Work Week (May 31- June 6th). The two commuter stations will be in Strathcona on June 2nd and June 4th.
The SBIA is opening up the opportunity for SBIA members to get involved with this event by providing snacks, beverages, prizes or employee volunteers for the over 200 bike commuters passing through our stations. This is a great opportunity to showcase your business and products. Get in touch with the SBIA office immediately to find out how to get involved with this sponsorship opportunity.
A fundraising Hoop-a-thon is being held at Strathcona Community Centre to help fund the centre's basketball program. The program provides a positive opportunity for kids who live in the DTES. Most of the 400 young people enrolled in the program are from working poor or single parent families with parents who work 14 - 16 hours a day just to provide the very basics.
Program participants will assemble in the Strathcona Community Centre Gym on Saturday, June 5th . They will be organized into ten teams and each team member will try to score as many free throws in a given time limit. The public can support the fundraiser through pledges for the participants.
The Strathcona Community Centre Basketball Program provides a positive life experience for kids who are constantly at risk of violence and drug addiction. It is one of the very few affordable, positive, safe activities for children in the downtown eastside, providing 400 kids, from preschool to grade 12, the opportunity to participate in sports.
The Hoop-a-thon will provide much needed funds for safe transportation to and from away basketball games; uniforms and shoes that allow players to participate safely and with pride and dignity and ongoing training camps and coaching certification.
For more information about the program and how pledges can be made, contact Ron Suzuki, Recreation Programmer, at 604-713-1851.
The Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA) has received a small grant to develop a community orchard and picnic area at the corner of Raymur & Malkin Ave. in an unused corner of the Cottonwood Community Garden. The end goal is that the produce will go to the Food Bank or to a Community Kitchen Programs. The grant is a matching grant which means that every dollar spent on plants, soil, etc. needs to be "matched" in either volunteer hours or in-kind items. EYA is already working with an after school kids program at the Strathcona Community Centre, as well as a seniors program and staff from the Vancouver Dog Pound and Vancouver Food Bank for volunteers but they are asking for Strathcona businesses to donate in-kind items to match the project costs.
- Food donations for volunteer snacks
- Lumber & hardware for construction of the picnic area
- Paint for the picnic tables & benches
If you have materials or goods to donate please contact: Samantha Charlton at samantha@eya.ca
