History
Strathcona reflects a deep and diverse history.
The Strathcona Business Improvement Association operates on the unceded territories of the xwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), sḵwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Their cultures and economies have shaped the district since time immemorial and remain an integral part of the Strathcona Community.
The currents of cultural history run criss-cross, deep, and dynamic through what is now called Strathcona. For millennia, the land was inhabited by Coast Salish First Nations. Burrard Inlet was home to many Indigenous communities — hundreds of years before working-class European, Asian, and African people settled the first residential neighbourhood of Vancouver.
We’re currently working with local experts and community members to help us share the vibrant and complex history of Strathcona. We look forward to launching this page soon.
